This website is designed to explore several constructions surrounding the concept of referential information. The site shall begin with an observation from Bela A. Banathy.

Getting Started:

"... actually, in my view of the world information is constituted of three fundamental fragments: nonreferential information, referential information, and statereferential information; and the referential fragment is responsible for the ontology of the system ...."  B

"It is argued that we can improve our understanding of living systems by focusing on their informational processes. Recent developments, primarily in evolutionary biology, cybernetics and systems theory, suggest that informational processes are of at least two, and probably three, different types; and that the interaction of these types can be seen as a basis for the self-construction of living systems.

Following the work of Csanyi and Kampis, a distinction is drawn between referential and nonreferential information.

This typology is further extended to include statereferential information.

The statereferential type serves to lend stability to informational arrangements (organization) that are viable so that they may be propagated in space and time."

"Also Kampis considers two aspects of information: In the sense of knowledge he names it as “ nonreferential information” and in the different (opposite) sense he defines “referential information” and connects it with actions that results into changes in (received) systems. Just this Kapis concepts of “infor-mation as action” corresponds to mentioned type “information from system”. To accept third concept (aspect) of information labelled by Banathy (1997) as “state referential...”

As a sidenote, it is interesting that nonreferential information and referential information are not polar opposites but are, rather, equivalent.

That is to say NR=Rc2

It would be quite interesting, thereby, if the universe was composed of non-referential systems! It needs to be further researched if it is true the universe is around 3% matter and that only matter is referential. (That seems unlikely but may be true except for the statistical conjecture, Hawkings, that information leaks and may, thereby, be a transfer of information.)
